Ughhh MOTHER OF GOD e.e I finally finished my second app for :iconcirque-des-reves: since my last one didn't work out... I feel a better connection with this character than my other one AAAAND I've added another male OC to my collection 8D

♥ N a m e : Noatak Arrluk (And no, I did not name him after Amon from the Legend of Korra LOL actually the night after I decided his name, I was lying in bed and thinking “hmm… the name Noatak sounds familiar… like it’s from the Legend of Korra or something…” so I looked up ‘noatak legend of korra’ and lo and behold… xD) But anyways, he goes by Simon at the circus to hide his roots.

Simon has a very calm and collected appearance on the outside. He tries very hard to portray himself as a laid back and relaxed guy when in reality he is often very stressed and frustrated. When it becomes too much for him, he will sometimes snap and go off on someone before realizing what he’s doing. He feels a little bit like an outcast most of the time because he is so used to the tribal way of life. Sometimes he regrets ever coming to the Circus because he feels so isolated. Then again, the thought of returning to his tribe makes him cringe. His frustration comes from the feeling that he can’t seem to succeed anywhere. Besides the occasional angst, Simon is a genuinely friendly guy. He is always around to help anyone in any way he can. He does however, get annoyed with those who constantly pester him while he's working or invade his personal space. Many people in the circus mistake him for the brooding Byronic hero mystery-type guy when in reality, he loves to talk to people. He's very curious about the city way of life. He doesn't want to seem stupid though, so he keeps most of his questions to himself. His pride is very important to him- pride was everything in his tribe. He hasn't quite grasped the concept of forgiven-failure. Being in a completely new world has caused him to make "shaming" mistakes. Although culture shock may have momentarily handicapped for Simon thus far, he has great ambitions and is determined to succeed.

♥ H i s t o r y :
Noatak Arrluk (Simon) was born into the Alutiiq tribe in Alaska. He is the middle child and has an older brother, Ikun, and a younger sister, Eska. His father, Ikiaq is brother to the chief of the Alutiiq tribe. Simon grew up in a very loving family, with many close friends and other relatives. However, by no means did he live a sheltered life. Since he was born, his father had been training him to survive on his own. The tribes’ food supplies were diminishing from the new cities popping up, driving away the wild game and polluting the rivers. The tensions were rising among the tribes of the Sitka River Valley, and raids were not uncommon among rival tribes, desperate for food and warm clothes. The Alutiiq camp was constantly under watch, as were all of the other tribes. The fear of being kicked out of their native lands by urbanization or being stomped out by another tribal alliance was a part of daily life for Simon. There was always something to be done, and weapons always needed to be furnished and supplied to the warriors. Simon discovered his knack for building and fixing when their tribe was raided in an exceptionally violent raid from the Kamik tribe, their former allies. Simon was only twelve years old at the time but he held up his own by using a double bladed spear he made for himself for protection. It was extremely sturdy, and his father noticed his talent right away.

After the damage had been done, Simon was a big part of helping with the cleanup and recuperation of the camp. He rebuilt the sod houses and repaired armor and weapons. His mother taught him how to make things out of reeds and plants around the area. He was one of the strongest in camp, yet he was still made fun of and called names like “craft boy.” Because of this, he often got into fights with the other boys in the tribe. Once he got older though, he was looked up to around camp for his skills. At the age of 16, his mother took him aside and told him he needed to leave the camp. She knew that he had been unhappy with his role in the tribe and knew he wanted to travel. He wasn’t content with tribe life like his brother and sister were. Even though he had been a major asset, his quality of life had been slowly making him depressed.

“Listen, Noatak… you need to leave here. This tribe isn’t a place for you anymore.”
Noatak couldn’t believe what his mother was saying. Leave the tribe?! No one ever just… left. It was considered treason.

“Mother,” he laughed. “You’re so weird sometimes. Like you’d ever let me leave.”

“Listen to be son. I’m- I’m serious. I understand. You have no life here anymore. There’s nothing for you here. I see the maps you bring home from the towns inland. You want to travel, you want to expand your horizons. I know you Noatak.” Tears had begun to gather in Anook’s eyes as she grabbed her son’s arms.

“I- yeah. How did you even find out? I tried to keep those maps a secret… I didn’t want you or father to get the wrong idea. I like it here in the tribes, I swear. You guys and Ikun and Eska are all here… and my friends…” he trailed off, unable to meet his mother’s eyes.

“I know you love us, and I know you like being here with your friends and family. But I can tell that you want more out of life. Noatak, my son, you are not happy here anymore. You have an incredible talent, but our ways I fear are becoming primitive in comparison to the outside world.” She paused, looking at the ground before continuing. “You know, I once went to the city while I was supposed to be off gathering plants. While I love our way of life, I couldn’t help but be in awe over the society that the city-dwellers had built. There was an abundance of metal- metal Noatak! Just imagine the things you could build with all of that iron and steel. They had intricate little circles with small hands that pointed to the time- all powered by these tiny flower looking things that moved with each other. And then they were riding around in these great moving boxes with wheels and they were powered by what seemed like magic! Just imagine you in that world. You would thrive, I know you would.”

Noatak blinked. He tried to wrap his head around what his mother was saying. Big boxes that rolled on wheels with nothing pulling or pushing them? It all sounded so crazy. Did he really belong in a world like that? “Mother… Are you really meaning what you say? What would father think? I can’t leave him… he’s already lost one son…”

“Little Salmon, don’t be ridiculous,” she called him by his childhood pet name. “You haven’t realized it have you? Ikun is doing what he is doing because he wants to please Ikiaq. He is only trying so hard to become a leader because he feels depraved of a father’s love. Ikiaq will come around. He will realize that this is for the best. You need to do this. Please, before your old mother passes into the spirit world. My one wish is to see you do great things for yourself. Not for anyone else. You have paid your dues to this tribe and now it’s your time.”

Noatak shivered despite being swathed in two layers of fur and seal skin. Suddenly an entirely new way of living was available to him. He didn’t have to remain the “craft boy” of the tribe anymore. With the help of his mother, over a course of a month, they packed supplies and food into a large sealskin pouch. In the summer, when the snow had melted and was pulled towards the Sitka River, so was Noatak. He swam across the cold water and set out on his own.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After leaving home and traveling for almost two months, Noatak arrived somewhere in San Francisco. It had recently become a bustling city due to the Gold Rush in California. Noatak had never seen so many people in his life, it was overwhelming. Having gone without a stable home for the last two months, he settled into a small shack towards the edge of town. At the time, California was rather lawless and there were many squatters on the land, so he blended right in and didn't have to pay any rent or dues on the land. At first, the only thing available to him was the leftover jerky he had made from kills along the way on his journey. He knew he needed some solid employment, but he wasn't about to go up into the mountains or splash around in the rivers and be killed searching for gold. One day, while taking a look around the town, he came across a blacksmith's shop. There he discovered casting, and hundreds of new tools and skills. He also learned of interchangeable parts, which had revolutionized modern manufacturing. After paying frequent visits to the small shop, the blacksmith asked his name. Noatak told the man that his name was Simon, afraid to reveal his native roots- he wanted an apprenticeship and did not want the man to think he was incapable because he had come from a tribe.

Taking on an apprenticeship at the shop, Noatak, now known around town as Simon, had become well known for his skills. He improved quickly and learned how to repair things using the different parts shipped in from the factories in the East. One day, he got word of a fantastic circus that was famous throughout the world for its breathtaking performances and almost supernatural quality. There were rumors about monsters, shapeshifters, and a maneater. Intrigued, Simon decided to buy tickets for the show with the money he'd been saving from outside jobs. He went in with low hopes but in the end, the circus completely captivated him. There were so many bright colors intermixing with the deep shadows looming over the giant topped tent. The sounds and the smells were amazing- and there really did seem to be magic going on that night. The thought of working there had never crossed his mind until he walked by a meager popcorn machine that was clicking horribly, smoke rising from it in little curls. No one seemed to be tending to the strange contraption, so he figured he would fix it for the circus owners while no one was looking. Despite never seeing that type of machine before, within few minutes of tinkering and everything appeared to be running smoothly. Someone just happened to see and since they were running low on mechanical specialists, Simon was offered a job.

♥ F a m i l y :
Ikiaq (father): Simon’s father is the brother of Maguyuk, the chief of their family’s tribe. Ikiaq always came second in everything to his brother so he and Simon get along well because of their similar situations. However, Maguyuk could never produce an heir because his wife died when she was giving birth to their first child. As a result of this, Ikun, being the oldest next in the bloodline would become the next chief of the tribe. To make this possible, Ikun went to live with Maguyuk and his new wife. Ever since then, Ikiaq became determined to train Simon to become just as great as his brother, even though he could never become chief.
Anook (mother): Anook is Simon’s mother. She is worried about him inheriting his father’s bitterness and was ultimately the one to convince him to leave the wilderness of Alaska to go find his place somewhere else.
Ikun (older brother): Heir of the chieftainship and Simon’s oldest brother. He’s often cold and aloof but cares a lot about his family and the welfare of the tribe. Although he has great leadership qualities, he often has low self-esteem and worries about letting his father down. Even if he and Ikiaq are near opposites, he still feels the strong urge to make him proud.
Eska (younger sister): Simon and his little sister Eska have a very love/hate relationship. They are always arguing and insulting each other, while Ikiaq tries way too hard to protect her. Eska is constantly irritated by both of her brothers and prefers to weave baskets with her mother and try to make friends with the seals.

~ His face paint is an embodiment of his totem spirit. He wears it when the circus is having shows. Example of an Alaskan totem spirit animal: [link] (although that one is a Salmon xD His is a killer whale)
~ His name “Simon” comes from his childhood nickname “Little Salmon.” Since his spirit animal is a killer whale, his parents would fondly call him the name of a more small sea creature.
